Repair Cavities Before They Become Bigger Problems
Cavities can develop before you notice pain or sensitivity. Preventative dental care in Ames helps us detect decay, worn fillings, and other concerns early, when a smaller repair may be enough.
During your exam, we check your teeth and existing fillings. When needed, diagnostic imaging and intraoral cameras help us take a closer look. We show you what we find and explain any recommended care.
Regular visits also give us a chance to help you prevent future decay. Together, we can protect healthy tooth structure and address small problems before they require more involved treatment.
Comfortable, Conservative Cavity Care
Our goal is to repair your tooth while preserving healthy structure whenever possible. We also want you to understand exactly why treatment is being recommended.
Depending on your needs, your care may include:
- Tooth-colored restorative materials are selected to blend with your natural teeth
- Intraoral images that allow you to see areas of decay or damage
- Conservative treatment focused on preserving healthy tooth structure
- Laser dentistry for appropriate cavities
- Sedation dentistry options for patients who feel anxious about treatment
- Comfort amenities designed to make your appointment more relaxing
As a fee-for-service practice, we can focus treatment recommendations on your dental needs and long-term oral health.

Our Dental Filling Services
Not every damaged tooth needs the same type of restoration. We evaluate the extent of tooth structure loss before recommending the most appropriate treatment.
Tooth-Colored Composite Fillings
Composite fillings use a tooth-colored resin that bonds directly to the tooth. This allows us to repair many cavities while maintaining a natural appearance. After removing the damaged portion of the tooth, we shape and polish the restoration to fit your bite and blend with the surrounding tooth structure. Composite material can also be useful when appearance matters, especially in visible areas of your smile.
Early Cavity Treatment
The best time to address tooth decay is often before it becomes painful. Routine examinations help us identify areas of decay that may not yet be causing noticeable symptoms. When a cavity is caught while it is still relatively small, the restoration may require less alteration of the tooth. Regular exams also give us a chance to monitor areas that do not yet require treatment.
Replacing Old or Failing Fillings
Existing fillings can wear, chip, loosen, or develop gaps over time. Decay can also occur around the edges of an older restoration. If we see signs that a filling is no longer protecting the tooth effectively, we will explain what has changed and whether replacement is appropriate. When possible, we can replace the damaged restoration with a tooth-colored material that supports both function and appearance.
Repairing Chipped, Cracked, and Worn Teeth
Not every tooth needs a filling because of a cavity. Small chips, worn edges, and limited areas of damage may also be restored with bonded tooth-colored material. If the damage appears connected to clenching, grinding, or the way your teeth come together, we may also evaluate the underlying cause. Our TMJ treatment approach considers how your teeth, jaw joints, and muscles work together, rather than repeatedly repairing damage without investigating the underlying causes.
Inlays and Onlays
Sometimes a tooth has too much damage for a standard filling, but may not require coverage of the entire tooth. Inlays and onlays provide another restorative option for certain situations. These restorations repair the damaged portion of the chewing surface while preserving healthy tooth structure whenever appropriate. We offer them as part of our broader restorative dental services.
Relief for Sensitive or Aching Teeth
Sensitivity to cold, pain when biting, or a persistent toothache can have several possible causes. Decay is one possibility, but a damaged restoration, a crack, an exposed root surface, or a bite problem may also contribute. We will examine the tooth and identify the likely source before recommending treatment. The right solution starts with understanding what is actually causing the discomfort.
Laser Dentistry for Comfortable Fillings
For some cavities, dental laser technology can make treatment more comfortable and reduce reliance on traditional dental instruments. Dr. Amie uses Waterlase technology as one of the advanced treatment options available in our Ames office.
Waterlase combines laser energy with a fine spray of water to treat hard and soft dental tissues. For appropriate fillings, it may allow us to remove decay with less vibration and less need for conventional drilling or local anesthetic.
Laser treatment is not appropriate for every cavity. The location, size, depth, and condition of the tooth all influence how we recommend treating it.
A More Relaxing Dental Experience
Dental treatment can feel very different when comfort is built into the experience. Our team works to create a welcoming environment for patients who have previously felt anxious or uncomfortable in dental offices.
Our comfort options include warm blankets, supportive neck pillows, and complimentary paraffin hand treatments. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are also available for qualifying patients when additional relaxation would be helpful.
Our goal is simple: help you receive the care your teeth need without making the experience more stressful than it has to be.
